Common clownfish

-

You may recognise this brightly coloured fish from Finding Nemo or its hit sequel, Finding Dory. Clownfish are unique in that they are the only fish able to survive swimming and living among anemones – a close relative of coral and jellyfish that has tentacles that can give nasty stings to other creatures.

LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: Roughly six to 10 years.

HABITAT: Shallow water coral reefs in the west Pacific.

DIET: They eat leftover fish and algae (a small aquatic plant) that the anemone leaves behind.

FUN FACT: The clownfish avoids stings thanks to a layer of mucus on its skin. This tricks anemones into thinking that they are touching their own tentacles.
