Security fears

-

The internet of things could improve our lives in many ways, but it might also create problems. One issue is privacy. Technology companies already collect huge amounts of data about our behaviour on the internet. As the internet of things grows, the connected devices around us will collect more and more detailed information about our lives – such as our likes and dislikes and our daily routines – without us realising. This data could be sold to companies that will target online adverts to appeal to you.

The number of different connected devices also increases the risks of hacking. Hackers may use the internet to break into people’s computers and steal information. This information could be used to break into people’s homes or steal money from their bank accounts. Connected devices of all kinds are already targeted by hackers: in October 2016, thousands of hacked devices around the world were used in a cyberattack that made it impossible to access websites like Twitter and Netflix. Some people are afraid that the internet of things will make hacking far easier.
