Double delight for Lyon and Madrid

-

Lyon and Real Madrid won the women’s and men’s football Champions League finals at the beginning of June. French team Lyon lifted the women’s trophy after beating Paris Saint-Germain, also from France, 7-6 on penalties on 1 June. Two days later, Spanish club Real Madrid defeated Italians, Juventus, 4-1 in Europe’s biggest club football competition. Both finals were played in Cardiff.

It was a double delight for Lyon and Real Madrid because they also both won the Champions League last year. Lyon goalkeeper, Sarah Bouhaddi, scored the winning penalty after the game finished 0-0. Lyon won the Champions League for the fourth time since 2011. Their four victories is a joint record shared with Germany’s Frankfurt.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the star for Real Madrid. The striker scored two goals as Real became

European champions for a 12th time. Gareth Bale was also very happy to help Real Madrid win because he was born in Cardiff and plays for the Wales national team. He’s only the sixth man to help win the trophy in his home city.

Real Madrid won the very first Champions League trophy in 1956, when it was called the European Cup. British teams Aston Villa, Celtic, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest have also won it. Arsenal are the only British team to have won the Women’s Champions League.
