Three other incredible invaders
Romans
The Romans arrived here in about 55BC and launched a huge attack 100 years later. Their legacy can still be seen in Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches all the way across the north of England. It separated Roman territory from that of ancient tribes in the north.
Normans
Led by William Duke of Normandy, the Normans from the north of France beat the English at the Battle of Hastings, in 1066. William became known as William the Conqueror. The Normans also wrote the Domesday Book, a list of all the land in England and its value.
Spaniards
This one doesn’t quite count, but in 1588, the Spanish king, Philip II, sent an armada (the Spanish word for a fleet of warships) to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. A combination of bad British weather and good British seamanship sent them packing.
