Campaign to keep cyclists safe

-

Cycling UK has said that action must be taken to prevent the injuries and deaths of cyclists caused by people “car-dooring” – opening car doors before checking that the coast is clear. As well as higher fines for opening car doors carelessly, the campaign group is calling for a Dutch door-opening method to be taught. The “Dutch reach” as it is known, involves opening the car door with the hand that is furthest away from it. This forces people to turn their body and look over their shoulder to check for approaching cyclists.
