The Scottish government has announced a new recycling scheme that will see customers paying a little extra for their bottles and cans – an amount that would be refunded when they are returned empty to a shop. It could save local authorities up to £6 million on litter clean-ups.
Tap water
Tiny plastic fibres, called microplastics, have been discovered in tap water across the world, prompting calls for research to be carried out on the effects this will have on people’s health. In the US, 94% of samples contained the fibres, compared to 72% in the UK.
