SLOANE STEPHENS

Just six weeks af­ter fall­ing to 957 in the world women’s ten­nis rank­ings, Amer­i­can Sloane Stephens has won the US Open tro­phy. The US Open is one of the four most im­por­tant events in ten­nis and Stephens is just the third player ranked out­side the top 10 to win the event.

BERMUDA SKINKS

Seven rare tiny rock lizards, known as Bermuda skinks have hatched at Ch­ester Zoo. It is the first time that the crit­i­cally en­dan­gered crea­tures have hatched away from the is­land of Bermuda. The rare baby rep­tiles have blue tails that can grow back if bit­ten off by a preda­tor.

A BRIL­LIANT FIND

Ar­chae­ol­o­gists have de­scribed the dis­cov­ery of arte­facts at an an­cient Ro­man cav­alry bar­racks (a place where sol­diers who fought on horse­back were based) as like win­ning the lot­tery. The items un­earthed in Northum­ber­land in­cluded rare swords, ar­row­heads, combs, shoes and even toy swords. The bar­racks date back to AD105.
