Just six weeks after falling to 957 in the world women’s tennis rankings, American Sloane Stephens has won the US Open trophy. The US Open is one of the four most important events in tennis and Stephens is just the third player ranked outside the top 10 to win the event.

BERMUDA SKINKS

Seven rare tiny rock lizards, known as Bermuda skinks have hatched at Chester Zoo. It is the first time that the critically endangered creatures have hatched away from the island of Bermuda. The rare baby reptiles have blue tails that can grow back if bitten off by a predator.

A BRILLIANT FIND

Archaeologists have described the discovery of artefacts at an ancient Roman cavalry barracks (a place where soldiers who fought on horseback were based) as like winning the lottery. The items unearthed in Northumberland included rare swords, arrowheads, combs, shoes and even toy swords. The barracks date back to AD105.
