CELEBRATE NATURE!

Get outside on World Environment Day

-

How much time do you spend outside, enjoying nature and all it has to offer? On 5 June, the biggest annual event for positive environmental action takes place. It’s called World Environment Day, and this year’s theme – Connecting People to Nature – encourages everyone to get outdoors and appreciate nature in all its beauty and importance.

Since World Environment Day began in 1974, thousands of events have been held around the world to celebrate the day. From community clean-ups to replanting trees, there have been many ways people have got involved to help preserve and protect their environment.

We rely on the natural world for lots of different things, including the air we breathe. Farmers and fisherman use the land and the oceans to produce and gather food for people to eat; scientists use natural materials, such as plants, to create a variety of medicines.

This year, lots of famous landmarks around the globe will be bathed in green light to remind people of the importance of protecting the planet we all share. As night falls on 5 June, famous buildings such as the Empire State Building in New York, US; Dubai’s Burj Khalifa; and the Mole Antonelliana building in Turin will all be lit up in green to mark World Environment Day. It’s not only buildings that will be getting in on the action – Niagara Falls on the border of the US and Canada, and Panama’s famous canal in Central America will also be lit in green.
