It wasn’t all bad

Hundreds of dog lovers turned out last week to join a whippet on his final walk. Walnut, 18, had suffered from a series of illnesses, and Mark Woods had decided it was time to ask a vet to put him down. But first, he resolved to take him on one last walk on Porth Beach, in Newquay. On social media, Woods asked if anyone wanted to join them; the response was overwhelming: thousands of people sent messages of support, and hundreds came to bid farewell to Walnut in person.

A couple who were forced to break off their engagement in the 1950s have finally tied the knot, 65 years later. Davy Moakes, 86, and Helen Andre, 82, met when they were studying at art college. Moakes proposed in 1951, but Andre’s parents refused to give the couple their blessing because they feared that as an artist, he’d be unable to provide for their daughter. They each went on to marry other people, but after their spouses died they were reunited. The couple (pictured) got married last week in Ripley, Derbyshire, before spending their honeymoon in Cyprus. “I have loved Davy my whole life, but now I’ve got him,” said Andre. “I feel like a teenager again.”

A year after terrorists stormed the venue, killing 90 people, Paris’s Bataclan theatre has reopened. British pop star Sting gave a concert to mark the occasion, having first led the audience – which included survivors of the attack, and relatives of its victims – in a minute’s silence. One survivor, a 25-year-old who gave his name as Aurelien, whose friend died that night, said it was the first time he had been in a confined public space since. “I’m here because it’s important to finish a concert that was never allowed to end,” he said.
