Toby impresses Kenton during a shift at The Bull and is offered some casual work. Kenton goes with Elizabeth to help pick a car for the twins and ends up buying himself a 4x4. Josh asks for a 24-hour loan from David, to buy a lawn mower to sell on to Richard Thwaite for a £600 profit. Toby turns up at Hollowtree and tells Rex of his plans to set up his gin still there. Rex objects, but Toby points out there’s nothing in the lease that forbids it – and Toby is party to the lease. Since Josh has gone awol, Rex is forced to accept Toby’s help slaughteri­ng the geese. David tells Josh that Richard had better not want a refund on the mower. Josh diverts his attention by revealing Toby’s plans for the still. Elizabeth tells Kenton she really likes Richard, but that after learning Shula has a crush on him, she’s worried about hurting her. Kenton says Shula would want her to be happy. David confronts Toby about the still. Toby says there’s nothing he can do to stop him. Ruth advises David to hold his tongue for the sake of a happy Christmas. At the court hearing, Rob’s contact with Jack is cut to once a month. Rob rants to Alan about how damaged his boys will be. Alan admits to Usha that perhaps not all of mankind is redeemable. Jill questions Toby about his use of the workshop. He winds her up with sarcastic replies. Jill wishes Toby would leave Pip alone and get off the farm. Toby says that won’t happen. When Pip discovers what Jill said, she suggests she and Toby have Christmas alone. Borchester Land approves the sale of estate land to Brian.
