Where to find… small music festivals in Europe
A Summer’s Tale, a family festival near Hamburg, has a “country fête feel”. Set on the edge of a forest, its focus is on food, art and theatre – but there’s good music, too, from the likes of PJ Harvey and the Pixies. 2-5 August (www.asummerstale.de). Sinsal Son Estrella Galicia is one for those with “a sense of adventure”. It takes place on the tiny Spanish island of San Simón – you’ll be ferried over from the mainland each morning, with little idea of the line-up. 21-23 July (www.festival.sins.al). Cactus, in Bruges, “retains the simple values of festivals of old”. Held in the Minnewaterpark, this year’s headliners include Kaiser Chiefs and Richard Ashcroft; there are also children’s performers. 7-9 July (www.cactusfestival.be). Mandala, a “classy family fest”, takes place in a holiday park in the Netherlands. There are performances from small bands, as well as yoga and other wellness activities. 9-11 June (www.mandalafestival.com).
