Emma Morano, the Italian woman who was the last remaining person known to have been born in the 19th century, has died aged 117 at her home in Verbania, on the shores of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Morano (above) was born on 29 November 1899, and attributed her long life to good genes; to leaving an abusive marriage in 1938, shortly after the death of her only child at the age of six months; and to her unusual diet of two raw eggs a day. The world’s oldest person is now believed to be another 117-year-old, Violet Brown from Jamaica, who was born in March 1900.
