Dump collapse:

-

At least 28 people are believed to have been killed last week, when a 23-million-tonne waste dump collapsed in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. Residents of Meethotamulla, on the city’s outskirts, had for years been demanding the removal of the 90-metrehigh dump, which created an unbearable stench, polluted water sources, and attracted swarms of mosquitos – to no avail. On Friday, weakened by recent floods and fires, it collapsed, destroying around 145 slum dwellings. Last month, a similar landslide in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, killed at least 113 people.
