What next?
In the aftermath of the attack, the Prime Minister repeated her pledge to review the Government’s counterterrorism strategy and create a “Commission on Countering Extremism”. On a visit to the scene, Theresa May also promised to provide extra police protection for Muslim communities and mosques.
But the incident has prompted fresh calls from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, for ministers to reverse proposed police cuts. The Met, which has already made more than £600m in savings since 2010, is expected to slash a further £400m by 2021.
