Gay female PM:
Serbia’s authoritarian right-wing president, Aleksandar Vucic, has surprised his allies by nominating an openly gay woman, Ana Brnabic, 41, to succeed him as PM. If the appointment is confirmed by parliament – and Vucic’s party says it will call a snap election if it isn’t – Brnabic (pictured) will be the first gay prime minister in a country in which 65% of people regard homosexuality as an illness. Vucic (PM until he won the presidency by a landslide in April) is believed to have appointed Brnabic, a loyalist, so that he can continue to control the government, as his new role is largely ceremonial.
