Mistrial in Cosby case:
The sexual assault case against Bill Cosby, the comedian once known as “America’s dad”, has been declared a mistrial. After 52 hours of deliberation, the jury in Philadelphia failed to agree a verdict on the charges against him. (Jury verdicts in Pennsylvania must be unanimous.) Prosecutors said they plan to seek a second trial, which they must do within 120 days. Cosby is accused of drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004. He has admitted giving her drugs, but insisted that they had a relationship and that the sex was consensual. Pundits have suggested inconsistencies in Constand’s testimony over the number of times she’d been alone with Cosby might explain the jury’s deadlock. Cosby, 79, has been accused of assault by scores of women, but this was the first time he has faced criminal charges.
