Residents of Durango, Colorado, were woken by a joyriding bear driving down the street. The animal had broken into the Subaru car and then accidentally released the parking brake, causing it to roll down the hill and smash into a postbox. The bear fled the scene before police arrived, but left plenty of evidence behind. It had smashed a window, ripped the steering wheel free of the shaft, destroyed the radio and defecated on the seats. “It would have taken a human hours to do what this bear did in a couple of minutes,” said one local resident. The rise in “extreme grooming” for dogs has been criticised by animal charities, who say pets don’t like being made to look foolish. The hobby – in which pet fur is dyed, trimmed and sculpted into elaborate shapes – has been big in the US and parts of Asia for years. And it’s now taking off in Britain, where one in five dogs and cats has its own social media account. But Caroline Kisko, secretary of the Kennel Club, says pets should not be groomed in such a way as to invite mockery. “Dogs know when they’re being laughed at. Some will feel silly.”

An Indian man claims he is not only immune to electric shocks but can also “eat” electricity. Naresh Kumar, dubbed “India’s living light bulb”, says he draws energy from high voltage wires, which he holds in his mouth or hands. “Whenever I feel hungry and there’s no food in the house, I hold naked wires and within half an hour I’m satisfied,” he says. “My wife is not impressed but surely other people will be.”
