It wasn’t all bad

The UK’S carbon emissions are at their lowest since 1890, according to a new report published by Carbon Brief. CO2 emissions have now fallen for five consecutive years. They fell 2.6% in 2017, and are down 38% since 1990 – one of the fastest rates of decline of any developed country. Analysts say the drop is largely down to a huge reduction in the use of coal. Coal burning accounted for less than 7% of the UK’S power generation last year, down from 40% in 2012.

A group of GCSE students has created a gadget that could bring an end to the injury known as “avocado hand”. When Shiven Patel (pictured, left), 14, cut himself trying to prepare an avocado for breakfast he came up with a simple solution: a hook-shaped knife with a point to fix into the stone. Patel joined forces with five fellow pupils at Brighton College and, with a little help from their DT teacher, created Avogo, which has now won a prize in the Design Museum’s Design Ventura competition. The team is raising funds to manufacture 250 units, which they will sell at £10 a piece, with the profits going to charity.

The graves of 89 Argentine soldiers killed in the Falklands War are finally being named, thanks to the efforts of campaigners in both countries. London and Buenos Aires agreed that the remains could be tested in 2016. However, the identification process was only made possible because of the efforts of a British officer, Geoffrey Cardozo, who in 1982 carefully buried the Argentine dead with their effects and logged all the details. “I am an army officer, I am a soldier, but before everything else I am a human being,” he said.
