“Bookkeeper of Auschwitz” dies:

-

Lüneburg, Germany

A former Nazi SS guard dubbed the “Bookkeeper of Auschwitz” died last week, still a free man. Oskar Gröning, 96, had worked as an accountant at the Nazi death camp, tallying money and valuables stolen from inmates, and sending it to Berlin. In 2015, he was convicted of being an accessory to the murder of 300,000 people and sentenced to four years, but owing to various appeals for clemency ongoing at the time of his death, he was never jailed. Fewer than 50 of the 6,500 SS personnel at Auschwitz who survived the War have been convicted.
