Where to buy… London Painters

The Week reviews an exhibition in a private gallery at Ordovas

-

If you’ve visited Tate Britain’s new exhibition of British figurative painting and come away wanting more, then this show devoted to the so-called School of London is well worth a visit. Other than frequenting the same Soho pubs, the painters affiliated with this “school” (the term was the invention of that archself-mythologiser R.B. Kitaj) never really had much in common, but seeing works by artists like Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and – of course – Francis Bacon displayed side by side is an undeniable thrill. This exhibition features an impressive range of talents: a number of Freuds, two stunning Bacons, a tremendous Leon Kossoff, and even a rare and utterly gorgeous portrait by the famously unprolific artist Michael Andrews. Not everything here is great – Kitaj, notably, lets the side down – but on balance, this small but fascinating display has a focus entirely lacking from the Tate show. Prices start at £35,000.

25 Savile Row, London W1 (020-7287 5013). Until 28 April.
