Palé Hall, Llandderfel, Gwynedd
A 19th century Jacobean-style mansion set in wooded grounds above the River Dee, Palé Hall opened as a hotel in 2016. It is splendidly old-fashioned, but homely too, says Sherelle Jacobs in The Sunday Telegraph – and a great base from which to explore the nearby Snowdonia National Park. Rooms have floral wallpapers, “squishy” sofas and claw-foot baths, and the public areas are magnificent, with crackling fires and gilded ceiling frescoes. Launched by Michael Caines (previously of Gidleigh Park), the excellent restaurant serves dishes made from local produce with “Asian flourishes”. Doubles from £190 b&b. 01678530285, www.palehall.co.uk.
