Rakhine state, Myanmar
Building over razed villages: The Burmese army is building new military bases on the bulldozed ruins of razed Rohingya villages in Rakhine state, thus obliterating evidence of what the UN has described as ethnic cleansing and possibly genocide. Amnesty International, which has used satellite photography to document the works, said that the “land grab by the military on a dramatic scale” would make the safe return of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh an even more distant prospect. Nearly 700,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine since last August.
