IT MUST BE TRUE… I read it in the tabloids

An art critic apologised after accidentally shattering a £15,000 glass installation at a prestigious Mexican art fair. Avelina Lésper placed an empty drinks can near the artwork, by Mexican artist Gabriel Rico, to register her disapproval of it. But the work, a large pane of glass with objects including a football and a feather suspended inside it, then smashed into pieces on the floor. Lésper apologised, adding: “It was like the work heard my comment and had felt what I thought of it.” A water-skiing squirrel is facing investigation for breaching a Vancouver by-law. Twiggy, who has its own life jacket and tours boat shows to educate crowds on water safety, was due to perform in the city. But officials have now launched a probe into whether the appearances violate a law preventing the use of rodents in exhibitions or competitions. Breaches are punishable by fines of CA$10,000 (£5,800).

A man who was rescued after trying to walk across the frozen Mississippi River blamed the mishap on Google Maps. He was pulled from the river in Minneapolis in the early hours of Saturday; he claimed the app had told him to cross the river, though it seems likely that it wanted him to use the bridge. He suffered a mild case of hypothermia.

A pensioner from Aintree has been jailed for 24 weeks for blasting Classic FM from his house. Ian Trainer tormented neighbours by playing music at “unbelievable” volumes for several years. Quizzed by police, he said: “I like playing music at a level I enjoy.”
