A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY

-

A CARE home resident in Finchampstead celebrated her 104th birthday with a giant cake last week.

Grace Rudder, who lives at Wild Acres Care Home, in Finchampstead Road, celebrated the milestone birthday surrounded by friends and family on Friday, June 16.

Daughter Penny Hunt, 74, joined her mother for the day from Sandhurst, and Grace’s grandchildren and greatgranddaughter visited her over the weekend.

Grace was born in Acton, west London, in 1913 and was the youngest of five siblings.

She married in 1940, but two years later, when she was three-and-a-half months pregnant with her daughter, her husband was killed in a tragic car accident. She never remarried, and raised Penny alone.

Penny said: “Mum has had a tough old life, but we all love her and she always has a smile on her face.”

Grace said the secret to her good age is keeping her brain active. She was a keen netballer in her youth, and would also participate in several winter sports.

“I like to do the quiz, because it gets me thinking,” she said. “I like living here [at Wild Acres], but if there is ever something wrong I do let them know.”

Home manager, Janet Elliott said: “Grace is still a very active resident here at Wild Acres, she loves to socialise and keeps up with everything that is going on. We love having her here.”
