TRIATHLON RACE SPECIAL

-

MORE than 60 people and seven teams took to the river and the road last weekend as part of the Wargrave Sprint Triathlon.

The conditions were perfect for the sporting event on Sunday, which saw competitors swim 750m, cycle 20km and run 5km.

Participants set off from the jetty at Ferry Lane, swimming upstream towards the railway bridge, before turning around and heading back to Ferry Lane where they picked up their bicycles. The ride took them down the A4 and along to Burchetts Green, before heading back towards Henley and up Remenham Hill, before descending Kentons Lane and returning to Mill Green.

The event finished with a 5km circular route around Mill Green.

Sophie Whitworth and Joey Rossi were the fastest individuals back with times of 1:15:35 and 1:08:39 respectively, while Alex Warner (swimming), Nick Parris (cycling) and Harry Gee (running) won the team prize with a time of 1:05:31.

Organisers Jo Hall, Hannah Young and Clare Winters, all local mums who complete regular marathons and triathlons themselves, were thrilled with the results.

Jo said: “We have raised over £1,000 towards The Wargrave Lido project, we are hoping to build an outdoor pool in Wargrave.

“Our sponsors were Davis Tate, Meglio, Edwards and White Sheet Metal production who made our fantastic medals and bike racking and Purple Foot Wine who provided the champagne on the finish line.”

Alex Warner commented: “Well done to the team for running such a magnificent event. I have travelled far and wide to compete and it really was great to have this event so local – it is up there with my favourites.”
