Rakels to move on

-

DENISS RAKELS is set to leave Reading after 18 months at the club.

The Latvian striker joined the Royals in January 2016 from Polish side Cracovia and is now in line to return to Poland with Lech Poznan.

It is believed the deal will initially be a oneyear loan with the Europa League outfit having the option to sign the player on a permanent basis next summer.

Rakels immediately became a fans’ favourite after a last minute winner against Charlton Athletic in just his fifth appearance.

He went on to score twice more under Brian McDermott at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, but found game time hard to come since Stam joined the club at the start of last season.

The international forward started the first game of 2016/17 but suffered a broken ankle during an EFL Cup clash with Milton Keynes Dons in August.

Despite returning to fitness around the start of the calendar year, Rakels has not even been in a matchday squad, despite featuring for his country, falling behind the likes of Joseph Mendes in the pecking order.

The deal is expected to be confirmed within the next week.
