WI looks to the future

TO MARK a century of meeting, members of the Finchampst­ead Women’s Institute (WI) have left a lasting memorial that generation­s to come will enjoy.

On Friday, March 16, the group gathered at the village’s Memorial Park to plant a copper beech tree close to the football pitch.

After members had each had a turn at placing soil around the tree, they toasted the century of the group with a glass of Champagne.

Shirley Williamson, the group’s president, said: “Many of the members are long-standing, but recently – because of the popularity of the

WI all over the country, Finchampst­ead WI has a thriving membership.

“Each month we have a speaker, afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes and a raffle. During the year we organise outings and visit places of interest.

“We have a theatre group, a lunch club, a knitting/sewing group and a walking group.

“We are currently organising lots of events during 2018 to celebrate this special year.”

The group meets from 2.15pm on the first Thursday of the month at Finchampst­ead’s Memorial Hall. Guests are welcome.
