This England

OLD COUPLE

- Bruce Gardner

The great oak stands, his acorn sown By Father Tree, who died outright. He stands where he was raised, full-grown, In gloried day and shrouded night.

And, next that oak, the smaller bay, Her beauty seen and noted by

The many that have passed and loved Her silhouette against the sky.

For decades, these have grown as one, Though seeming not to share a glance, Their arms wave at the self-same sky, And sway, as if in joyful dance.

Their oneness is their purpose, still, Their single goal received from God, And each does with the other touch And thrill, beneath the leafy sod.

Above, they seem as accidents; Below, they’re destiny:

The oak and bay together trust Their rooted symmetry.
