TV MEMORIES
Looking at TVs being advertised with ever bigger and bigger screens brought back memories.
In 1948 my dad bought a second-hand TV for £50. It was a 1936 Murphy with a nine-inch screen.
When we looked at it, it was with blinds drawn. The programmes left a lot to be desired. I remember watching Rudolph
Valentino in The Sheik. He died in 1926. There was also Victor McLaglen in Dick Turpin from 1933.
Some years later Dad bought a TV with a 12-inch screen. The Murphy was given to my aunt. I don’t know how long she kept it, but she passed it on to a relative.
No doubt the old Murphy no longer exists; a pity – it would be a collector’s item now. It did not take a lot to keep us happy in those days.
