The big fat Masters quiz
Five PGA Tour stars who’ve been invited to the tournament answer 10 tricky questions about it
I haven’t really a clue… Bobby Jones? Hagen? Unfortunately my golf history is absolutely awful’
ROUND ONE 1. True or false: Augusta National was primarily designed by Alister Mackenzie?
Ogilvy: Credit on the plans probably say Mackenzie, but Bobby Jones was heavily involved, too. Mediate: It was Mackenzie and Bobby Jones. Mcgirt: Absolutely true. Pampling: True, though I gather there were a couple of people involved. Streb: I am going to say that’s true. 2. Where do the amateurs traditionally stay on site? Ogilvy: The Crow’s Nest. Mediate: Crow’s Nest. Mcgirt: The Crow’s Nest. Pampling: Butler’s Lodge… no, Butler’s Cabin. Streb: I think it’s in the Butler Cabin.
3. Who was the first European winner? Ogilvy: Seve. Mediate: Let me think: Faldo. No, wait… I don’t know, who was it? Seve… that’s embarrassing. Mcgirt: Not 100% on this so I’m going to plump for Sandy Lyle. Pampling: Is it a long way back? Before Sandy (Lyle)? Was it Seve? Streb: It wouldn’t be Bernhard Langer would it? Don’t know. Seve? That’s terrible, pathetic. I should have known that.
ROUND TWO 1. Which hole is called Golden Bell?
Ogilvy: No.12. Mediate: That’s the par-3 12th. Mcgirt: No.12, without a shadow of doubt. Pampling: Which nine is it on? Is it 18? Streb: Sorry, I’ve got a blank there.
2. Who won the very first Masters? Ogilvy: Damn, I know this.
Only two people have won their first Masters Fuzzy Zoeller and… Horton Smith. Horton Smith! Mediate: I know this, too. It wasn’t Horton Smith was it? I’ve pulled that one out of the hat… Mcgirt: Oh, this one’s got me. Was it somebody Bell? Horton Smith… I would never have got that. And that was medium? Pampling: Struggling here so I’ll go with Gene Sarazen. Streb: I haven’t really a clue… Bobby Jones? Hagen? My golf history is absolutely awful. 3. What was the original name of the Masters? Ogilvy: The something Invitation Tournament. I’m not getting the whole thing. Mediate: The Masters Invitational Tournament. Well, some invitational tournament.
Mcgirt: Pretty sure it’s the Augusta Masters Invitational. Am I right? Pampling: Was it the Georgia Open… or Georgia Classic? Streb: Was it the Bobby Jones Invitational or something like that?
ROUND THREE 1. Who is the reigning Masters champion?
Ogilvy: Danny Willett. Mediate: Who won last year? Willett. Mcgirt: Dead easy. Danny Willett. That’s another point… Pampling: You’ve got to give me an exemption because I’m 47 and I forget people’s names! Remembered, it’s Danny Willett. Streb: That’s Danny Willett and has doubled my points tally.
2. Who registered the Masters’ first double eagle (albatross)?
Ogilvy: Gene Sarazen (quick-as-aflash response). Mediate: Sarazen on 15 with a 3-wood. Mcgirt: I know this one; Sarazen. Pampling: Let’s go with Gene Sarazen on 15 I believe. Streb: Was it Sam Snead? That’s a really tough ‘medium’ question!
3. Which player had elk on the Champions Dinner menu?
Ogilvy: Elk… the animal elk? This is real Masters trivia. It’s got to be fairly recently. I’ve no idea, someone who hunts. Anyone have moose? Mediate: Well, Steve Elkington never won so it couldn’t have been him. I’ve got it – Billy Casper. Mcgirt: I’ll have a stab at Mike Weir. Pampling: Wow! How long ago – recently or way back? Tiger… Streb: Sounds like a trick question. Steve Elkington?
BONUS QUESTION The highest score on any hole in the Masters is 13, carded by Tommy Nakajima... and who else?
Ogilvy: I want to say Tom Weiskopf, but he might have had an 11, but I’ll stick with Weiskopf (left). Mediate: I think it was Tom Weiskopf. Mcgirt: I’m going to have to say John Daly in one of his meltdowns. You should have asked how many holes are there on the Par 3 course… it’s 11 by the way. Pampling: Sounds like John Daly to me! Streb: Was it John Daly? Now that’s a good question...
