THE FAMILY MAN

After landing at Manchester airport proudly donning the coveted green jacket, Willett said: “I want to get home, put the kettle on, change some nappies, close the door and settle down for a bit.” He owes a lot to his wife Nicole, who delivered their first child Zachariah just days before he was due to leave for Augusta. Had she not, Willett would have stayed at home and watched the Masters on TV.

THE OLYMPICS

Golf made a welcome return to the Olympics after a 112-year absence, but it proved a major disappointment for Willett who was never in the hunt – unlike fellow countryman and gold medallist Justin Rose – and finished T37 on level par.

THE RYDER CUP

Willett’s Ryder Cup debut at Hazeltine ended in disaster. He succinctly summed the experience up by describing it as ‘sh*t’ and, when asked to elaborate, responded with ‘really ‘sh*t’. Willett’s cause wasn’t helped by his brother’s derogatory comments about US fans.

THE MONEY

After becoming the second Englishman to win the green jacket, Willett surpassed the £10m mark in career earnings and was tipped to become England’s richest ever golfer, with off-course earnings totalling £5m over the next two years.

THE TRAPPINGS

He celebrated joining the maiden Major club by splashing out £140,000 on a new Mclaren 570S with an equally-striking US16 MAS number plate.

A WINNING CADDIE

At last year’s Dunhill Links, Willett and bagman Jonathan Smart won the team event. Willett was full of praise for his partner’s putting prowess, saying: “It made everyone, including us pros, look bad on the greens. It was daft!”
