Today's Golfer (UK)

Believe and achieve

-

While reading the summer issue of Today’s Golfer, I came across the Q&A with Steven Cafferty and how golf can help to overcome handicaps in life. I say this from experience as, in 2013, my son Aidan was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. After a four-week battle, he lost his hearing and balance and was unable to play football again, meaning his Blackburn Rovers contract was revoked. After three months of rehabilitation, he was able to walk unaided so I took him to a driving range to see if this would help his balance. After a few frustrating visits, he finally got to grips with it and ended up joining my golf club at Heworth in Gateshead. He started off with a 28 handicap but by the time the season had ended, he had won four trophies and the Golfer of the Year award. He’s now down to 15 and is outdriving his dad by miles.
