Breadsall Priory, Derbyshire
Marriott has several excellent golf resorts in the UK and this historic East Midlands treat is among the best of them. It also happens to be the oldest Marriott location in the world, with the elegant Priory rooms in the main mansion dating back to 1260.
The venue is ideally located within 300 acres of majestically landscaped grounds just outside Derby and within comfortable striking distance of local attractions Chatsworth House and the Peak District.
The golf, though, is the chief attraction – Breadsall boasts two contrasting 18-hole courses. The wonderfully undulating Priory parkland is the star at this time of the year but the neighbouring fast-draining Moorland – designed by Donald Steel – takes centre stage in winter time.
Both layouts have a good variety of holes, are challenging, are usually found in good condition and are overall well worth playing.
The Priory kicks-off with a gentle short par4 opener and finishes with a fine tree-lined par 5, the green overlooked by the hotel. You can warm-up on the good practice facilities.
There are 112 rooms, with a dozen housed in the original Priory building – which is steeped in history. And you can unwind in the Priory Retreat Spa or heated indoor pool. Traditional British grub is served in the awardwinning Priory restaurant while the Tempo features grill dining and a casual bar. Contact: 01332 832235.
