IS THIS THE CRAZIEST GOLF SWING IN THE WORLD?

Ho-sung Choi has all the moves – and a place in the heart of every golfer who swings it a little bit differently

Move aside Adam Scott. Everyone’s favourite swing in golf now belongs to . Ranked 500th in the world, the 44-year-old journeyman is living proof that there’s a million different ways to hit a golf ball; only his might be the most unorthodox – and freespirited – yet. What starts off as a standard swing finishes with a pirouette on one leg in the follow-through, and the occasional hop and lean from side-to-side. Many Tour pros have even tried to copy the motion, which has been nicknamed ‘The Fisherman’ due to its resemblance to an angler reeling in a big catch. One fan even ran a petition to get the Korean an invite to the Open and on this evidence, who can blame them?

WHAT OUR COACH SAYS

Technically, there’s a lot to admire here. He’s pretty orthodox in his set-up, his backswing is on plane and his impact position is at the level you would expect from a top-level pro. The craziness begins post-impact when he rotates onto his left foot, lifts the right off the floor and sometimes spins right round. It looks funky because we are so used to seeing pros swing with poise and in balance. What it does show, however, is Choi’s commitment to every shot and the sense of freedom he has. So many amateurs make the mistake of searching for the perfect swing, and then lose their natural “feels”. But as long as you’re finding the sweetspot more often than not, there’s nothing wrong with swinging freely and unconventionally. There’s no pictures on the scorecard remember!
