A shot distance calculator is really useful for working out yardages for each club in your bag, and a step counter helps keep track of your daily activity. A reversible strap means you can change the look of the watch, too.

Garmin S10 £139.99 www.garmin.com Garmin refer to the S10 as an entry-level GPS watch, but unlike some, along with all the usual front, centre and back yardages, it displays distances to doglegs, lay-ups and hazards. You can also keep score on it so no need to worry if you don’t have a pencil.

Skycaddie LX3 £149.95 www.skygolf.com A feature-laden gadget which can tell you everything from how many calories you’ve burnt to how many fairways you’ve hit, as well as sending you notifications of missed calls, texts and emails. Perfect for the gadget geek who insists on knowing more than just basic yardage information.

Golf Buddy WTX+ £199 www.eu.golfbuddyglobal.com A whole new level of GPS watch. The touchscreen lets you toggle between key distances and scroll through the hole’s layout before you play a shot. That can be a real benefit if you play lots of golf away from your home track. The tech comes at a cost, but this stylish watch is seriously multi-functional.
