Andy becomes a family van man

- ANDY FRANKLIN

Most sensible people tend to have 2.4 children. Sadly I’m not sensible and I have three. One of the many dilemmas that comes with having three children is what car to get. Even though it is becoming a larger market, there are no two ways about it – the options are limited.

You can go for a 7str MPV (yawn) an SUV (£££) or a van. Yes, a van. But, as it happens, I love vans and I love driving them too. They make total sense for the needs of the larger family and, I suspect, they’re often overlooked. And expensive. This costs about £5k more than the equivalent van. As this is TG, we opted for the most iconic van of them all, the Transit. Or Tourneo, if you want to be posh... but it’s still a Transit.

We’ve chosen not to get the LWB because, quite frankly, the SWB is large enough. Under the short-overhang front end is the 2.0 EcoBlue (new-gen) diesel with a six-speed manual. Inside there are eight seats with many, many, many confgurations. There’s an 8in touchscreen, which bizarrely has CarPlay but no satnav. Clearly Ford thinks that using your smartphone for information is the future.

Initial thoughts are that it looks great, especially in metallic grey. There’s also ample space. My kids are already obsessed and even want to go to school if it means going in the van – though I’m sure the novelty will wear of soon.

But, joking aside, it’s already making my life easier. The problem I’ll have is holding onto the keys once the TG ofce clicks on that I’ve got the best car on the feet...
