It’s hello to the Aston Martin DBX and Audi e-tron GT and goodbye to the BMW 4-Series as we pit it against its grandfather

SOME PEOPLE’S DEFINITION OF LUXURY COULD WELL BE DEFINED BY unlimited choice, and in the automotive space the ability to personalise every element of your new vehicle so it meets your precise requirements creates an opportunity for the car firms to add revenue to every vehicle.

The scale of choice available on the DBX presents opportunities to create something you know no one else will have, but equally opens the door to some truly terrifying taste bypass specification nightmares.

For me, the DBX looks best in technical colours, but being an Aston it should exude luxury. So, having chosen Ocellus Teal we added a dark exterior pack, matte black and bronze wheels to contrast with the yellow calipers, a chocolate brown interior with broguing and then matte oak interior accents. To confirm my brilliance I jumped on a Zoom call with Aston chief creative officer, Marek Reichmann... who politely suggested we could do better. The dark pack was replaced with bright aluminium to highlight the lines and accentuate the form, the dark wheels replaced with their brighter alternative in the same style and the dark brown interior replaced with a blue one with silver stitching and light contrast broguing.

In addition to the base car we also added the Indulgence Package which gives you 16-way adjustable front seats with heated and ventilated front and rear seats and acoustic privacy glass, the Convenience Package with its powered tailgate and gesture control, the DB Elegance Package which adds quilted leather and embroidered logos, and the Towing Package.

While the choice is almost limitless, the genuine enjoyment of the process of speccing something as luxurious as a DBX is part of the joy and expectation of ownership. And who knows, your specification may well get picked up and used as an example with its own lofty moniker. I think we need a name for ours... TOWIE Tourer?
