Total 911 assesses the rare and unusual Neunelfers currently for sale from around the world

We love a race car here at Spotted, and much as we like the functionality of a bare white shell with its straight-from-weissach vibe, we’re also partial to bold and bright 911s. And is there a better combination of colour and model than the 964 in Rubystone? Or Ruby Star, if you prefer (we don’t). Race cars are compromised, though, by their track requirements, but this month’s car has all of the above covered, because this Rubystone 964 Carrera Cup car has been road registered.

A quick recap. Porsche’s Carrera Cup was conceived in the late 1980s, and still runs to this day. Taking a production 911 and turning it into a racer, the first 964 Carerra Cup was unveiled in 1989. Spun off from the standard Carrera, the Cup car was engineered by Roland Kussmaul and came with a blueprinted, dual-ignition, 3.6-litre flat six engine with around 265hp, zero interior trim, a roll cage, racing suspension, brakes and a chasing pack of other identical examples driven by equally committed drivers all over your backside as you approached the first corner.

‘Our’ example is a 1991 car, in the aforementioned hue (just look at it again, will you..?). The neat racing mirrors make the already compact dimensions of the 964 look even more so, while the split-rim alloy wheels add to the cool motorsport schtick. This example was delivered to a Mr Wilfred Holzenthal for competition in the German Carrera Cup. The ONS Wagenpass that accompanies the car highlights that it left Weissach on 26 February 1991, and ran in its first race in March, completing a further 10 races in the hands of Marco Spinelli and Otto Rensing for the Kilian Tuning team from Neuss. There are some period photos of it in that racing documentation, with the livery pretty much limited to a few Recaro, Blaupunkt, Pirelli and Shell stickers, with number roundels on the doors and bonnet. And yes, we’ve just lost hours on the internet seeking out photos and watching videos of 964 Carrera Cup cars being raced, and raced hard. Damn, it looks like fun.

That racing documentation has an interesting scribble on it, with the car signed out of the racing department by a young engineer by the name of Jost Capito. He would go on to do some big things with Porsche, and elsewhere, just like many of the drivers who would gain their racing stripes in Carrera Cup cars through the years.

This Rubystone car enables you to live out those fantasies, and thanks to its road registration you can do so without having to take it to the track. We’d love it, no question. The 964’s a favourite here, and so is the colour, so to be strapped in with splashes of it visible on the exposed cage and floor around you would undoubtedly be a huge thrill.

Not just for you, either, because when the car was carefully and respectfully rebuilt, a passenger seat was added.

We’re not usually ones to mention something as uncouth as money here. However, looking at the €350,000 that’s being asked for the 964 by www.early911s.de, in the current crazy market we think that’s pretty reasonable. Be warned, though: if this car’s not caught your attention enough then there’ll be something else in Early911s’ sales stock that will. Its inventory list is extensive, and impressive.
