Summer’s here in Australia. Driving season. Somewhat paradoxically, there hasn’t been much driving! My sense is that the lead-up to Christmas, combined with people travelling during the holiday period of January (myself included) has meant the gang hasn’t been doing as much driving. But we’ve still managed a run or two and I’ve found opportunities for solo runs as often as I can.

With fewer opportunities to drive,

I’ve been looking for other things to inspire myself and have made some trips specifically to take photos. I’m always amazed by how photogenic the 964 is – it certainly gets a lot more love on Instagram than any other cars I’ve owned or posted. I find looking at the car through the lens, trying to capture the perfect moment and then editing images in Lightroom and Photoshop such an enjoyable creative process.

As I approach a finished result, there’s always a moment when I realise the car does more than half the work for me – it’s quite the muse and quite the model!

I did decide it was time to replace my windscreen. I’ve had the same

windscreen in the car for nearly seven years, which meant it was well and truly done, with stone chips aplenty. What a transformation! The difference in visibility is mind blowing and makes me wish I’d done it sooner.

The only other item of maintenance has been my air-conditioning. For a while now, it’s not been blowing particularly cold. Speaking to a pal who also owns a 964 and swears his AC blows ice-cold had me thinking I needed to re-gas mine, so I asked for that to be done while the car was in for the windscreen.

Turns out the AC needs more significant work than re-gassing. It requires a new evaporator core and mixer flap; expensive items which, when

combined with the high number of hours required, makes for a very costly fix. I’ve never been one for deferred maintenance but, with just two weeks of summer left, I’ve decided to wait until later in the year to address this.

As I write this, I’m two weeks out from Alpine Range Rally 9. My pal Rocco and I have been organising ARR since 2018 and it’s an event I always look forward to. Three days on incredible roads with great mates. For once I’m not rushing to ready my car for the trip. It’s good to go! All that’s needed is fuel in the tank, air in the tyres and for the car to be detailed (so that it looks perfect until the rain starts as soon as I leave the house on day one). Fun times ahead!
