05 Take to the track
Turn up at any track day and you’ll see 911s making up a good portion of the participants, and for good reason, because you really don’t need a GT3 RS MR to enjoy a track day. Any 911 will do: new, old, air- or water-cooled, paddle or manually shifted… all will deliver lap times that’ll thrill.
The bottom line is that the track is the best place to unleash the performance potential of your Porsche – you’ll be amazed at what these cars can do. More to the point, you’ll realise that the capabilities of a 911 on track will usurp your own!
The track doesn’t have to be somewhere like Silverstone, either. All tracks are fun. Indeed, tighter, more technical tracks are arguably more of a test of you and your car. There are countless companies that organise track days from full-day events to afternoon sessions and, in the summer, a good deal of evening outings – which are an excellent introduction if you’re a novice.
You’ll need a helmet, and to be wearing long sleeves and long trousers. It’s worth taking out trackday insurance, too. If you do catch the bug, you might find it worthwhile investing in a second set of wheels and tyres, as well as upgrading the brakes, though our next entry (overleaf) might prove more fruitful first.
Do that and you might fancy adding an element of competition. Then you could try auto tests, hill climbing and sprints. These grass-roots motorsport events are relatively inexpensive, although you’ll be required to obtain the necessary competition licence. Here’s a warning though, because once you’ve tried it, it’s difficult not to get addicted… and then things will start to become expensive.
