PASSION PROJECT
Emotive illustrations decorate a limited edition of
Madame Bovary ‘I spent a whole year dedicated to Madame Bovary,’ says Nushka, the Marseille-based artist whose emotionally charged oil paintings adorn the pages of a new Folio Society edition of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel, translated into English by Adam Thorpe. ‘I read the book many times and sought out every illustration and film that had been made, because I wanted to address all aspects of Emma Bovary’s character and story.’ To create her subtly abstract artworks, Nushka staged scenes using live models, props and costumes, imbuing each vignette with the same immediacy and vitality that characterise Flaubert’s powerful language. fh ‘Madame Bovary’ by Gustave Flaubert, illustrated by Nushka (£245, Folio Society), is published on 27 May, exclusively available at www.foliosociety.com.
