Canalside pub at centre of regeneration scheme

- By Colin Wareing

SAFE Regeneration – a community social enterprise and arts organisation – has put together a master plan for regenerating sites along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as part of a ‘Destination Bootle’ scheme.

The plan is base on an area around the Lock & Quay pub that is alongside the canal in the Merton Road and Caroline Street areas.

The pub would be redeveloped, still retaining historical features, while the former Caroline Street Wharf would be built on alongside the canal basin or arm.

The proposal includes a range of homes, work spaces, entertainment and creative spaces and a micro brewery, along with boat moorings.

Architects Ellis Williams have been appointed to oversee the project, working with a range o partners including the Canal & River Trust.
