Scottish canals offer warm welcome to late summer visitors

- By Cicely Oliver

STAFF at the hire boat centre at the Falkirk Wheel, offering holidays on board narrowboats and widebeams, were looking forward to welcoming holidaymakers from the middle of July.

International visitors have generally moved their Scottish visits to 2021, and UK-based visitors with bookings later in the year still have their hire boat holiday to look forward to.

There is lots of interest from south of the border and from Scots looking to holiday close to home this year. With a video handover, updated skipper’s guides and social distancing in place, visitors will still get the usual comprehensive information about the boat, the canals and places to stop, eat and drink.

With many holidaymakers heading for Edinburgh, the breach of the Union Canal on August 12 has seen a large part of the hire fleet stranded on the eastern side of the breach.

While there are some hire boats available on the Forth & Clyde Canal, Scottish Canals and their partners are in the process of assessing the immediate situation and plans for the remainder of the season.

Caley Cruisers, operating high-quality motor cruise hire on the Caledonian Canal, including Loch Ness, has reopened for bookings. You can find late availability on the website and there are currently still vacancies for September and October.
