Towpath Talk

Spring to life…

- By Lee Senior

The start of a new gardening season is upon us and spring is my favourite time of year, full of exciting anticipation for the warmer months ahead.

All across the UK, buds are bursting into new growth. There is plenty of tree blossom visible from the towpath provided by the likes of the flowering cherry (Prunus) with its eye-catching white or lilac-pink blossom and hedgerow favourites such as hawthorn and blackthorn (Prunus spinosa).

At ground level, the understory planting is dominated by bluebells, celandines, dandelions, wood anemones, common dog-violets, cowslips and more.

Topical monthly tasks

April is a great month for sowing both flower and vegetable seeds.

Seeds of annual half-hardy summer bedding plants that can be sown now include the likes of ageratum, marigold, impatiens and salvia. Protect from frost until the end of May.

Growing your own salad is quite easy to do and doesn’t take up too much room. Seeds of the mini lettuce ‘Little Gem’ can be sown from now throughout the summer. It is perfect for small areas and containers and won’t take up too much room.

Mixed salad leaves can also be sown now and are ready to eat a month later. They are perfect for adding crunch and flavour to sandwiches!

The seeds of dwarf varieties of cucumbers and tomatoes can also be sown in gentle heat this month along with mizuna, rocket and spring onion.

Early and second early potatoes will grow very successfully in large containers, barrels, sacks or even old compost bags containing John Innes compost or good quality garden compost.

If planted now they will be ready for harvest in 10-12 weeks. Protect from frost at all times and earth up as required.
