Ram’s Island needs you!
THE River Bann and Lough Neagh Association (RBLNA) is appealing for volunteers to help with the Ram’s Island Heritage Project.
Ram’s Island is nearly one mile long by a quarter of a mile wide and is the largest island on Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. Notable features of the island include a round tower and the ruins of the O’Neill’s 19th-century summerhouse. Its remote wilderness and lost-in-time qualities make Ram’s Island a pleasant and attractive place to visit.
For many years the only source of funding has come from the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. This is supplemented with the income received from camping, glamping and day trips to the island but with ongoing issues with Island Warrior, which has been in use as a regular ferry to the island since 2006, these have become limited.
The Ram’s Island Heritage Project is run by a small team of volunteers working tirelessly for the registered charity RBLNA. There are no paid staff and everything is undertaken by the volunteers which means that 100% of donations received goes towards the maintenance, upkeep and care of Ram’s Island but the project is vast and more help is urgently needed. From litter picking to Himalayan balsam bashing, whether you are skilled or unskilled, Ram’s Island needs you!
