Meall Greigh & Meall Garbh

-

1 NN666482 Head down the wooded track to a bridge over the River Lyon. Keep left, to Dericambus farm. Pass between buildings, to a gate on the right. A faint old green track zigzags directly uphill. Where the track fades, cross the stream on the right and head west, up heathery rough ground, to the minor summit (but major viewpoint) Creag Dhubh.

2 NN661470 Head south-east across the wide, flat col, quite boggy unless frozen. Follow a fence up a long, gentle ridgeline. At 800m altitude the ridgeline levels off. Follow the fence south then south-west, then uphill south to a fence corner on the main ridgeline. Beyond the fence corner, turn left on a welltrodden ridge path for the short rise to Meall Greigh. The further cairn, with views to Loch Tay, is the main summit.

3 NN674438 Return along the ridge path, north-west at first, then bending west. After a long, gentle descent, follow the fence uphill quite steeply. As the slope eases off, the fence and ridgeline bend left, south-west, to Meall Garbh summit.

4 NN643436 The out-and-back to An Stuc is steeper and more serious, giving the walk its technicality grade of 5 rather than 3. Leaving it out reduces the walk by 2km and 200m ascent. Up for it? The ridgeline narrows to descend to the col before An Stuc’s steep cone. This is taken on its east-facing side, a little round to the left.

5 NN638430 Return the same way to Meall Garbh (Point 4). From Meall Garbh, continue retracing steps 800m north-east to the point where the ground steepens and the fence bends to the right. Here leave the fence, to head down moderate slopes northwards. At the 900m level, a clear ridgeline heads down east of north.

6 NN650445 Head all the way down the ridge, until the ground steepens again at the 500m contour, with the tops of plantations below. Head down to the right to join Inverinain Burn in its hollow. From the intake dam of a micro-hydro scheme, follow a rough track downstream.

7 NN655470 Where the stream enters the plantation, turn up to the right, on a track along the tops of the trees. After a short climb the track runs down ahead along the top of the plantation. At the plantation corner, the track turns down sharp left, to reach a valley-bottom track near Inverinain. Turn right, away from that farm, to the bridge over the River Lyon from the outward route.
