Keen Terradora £110

Lighter and narrower than big boots, approach shoes allow you to be a bit nimbler on your feet, with more sensitive ground feel – something I love. These make a fine cross-over, with some soft ankle support, waterproof lining and robust protection around the toe. They’re super-comfortable and I’ve taken to kicking around in them pretty much anywhere. If you have decent ankle strength they could even take you to some quite high places – though they’re best suited to lowerlevel walks. They’re brilliant for wearing on the way to the hills, pulling on when you get back, and for mooching to the pub. They basically live either on my feet, by the front door or in the boot of my car, almost permanently coated in mud. I should really clean them, but they have to be off your feet for that and these rarely are.

Basically slipper-boots, perfect before and after high mountain walks. www.keenfootwear.com
