Gregory Paragon 58

+ weight; minimal body contact; supportive belt; adjustable back length; front pocket

– less airflow than some heavier packs; floating lid without extra baffle to body

This 58 litre capacity pack has an Aerolon back system. This provides fewer body contact areas than the lightest packs, but less airflow than heavier packs. The body has base compartment access and a top opening with floating lid. The front and sides feature stretch pockets and you also get a zipped lid and zipped adjustable hipbelt pockets. This is a relatively light pack at 1864g. 5/5

The Paragon 58 comes in S/M and M/L back lengths for men. There is no women's version, but the same back system is used on the women's Maven 65 (£175). You can raise the shoulder straps to adjust fit and the hipbelt, shoulder straps and back are well-shaped so, like many Gregory packs, it hugs you. 4/5

There is a little less airflow here than on heavier designs, but you still get reasonable comfort as the shoulder straps and back system fit so neatly. However, the lumbar pad doesn't have an airmesh covering, so it may get a bit sweaty – a potential issue for warmer weather. Being relatively light does improve the comfort factor though. 4/5

On the hill, this fares well as it has quite a simple compartment layout. The front stash pocket is great for a jacket, and the side stretch pockets and compression straps allow trekking poles or other items to be stashed on the sides – although quick-release buckles on the compression straps would be good. Other packs have more zipped pockets, but those on the hip-belt and lid work well enough. 4/5

A good price for this level of rucksack and good value based on its performance. 3/5

If you are looking for a lighter design then this is a great option, but less airflow means it may not fare well in warmer climates. 4.0/5
