I guess the most life-changing hill was High Street in the Lake District, because I got engaged in a boathouse overlooking Ullswater, and climbing it in a white-out was the first thing I did wearing an engagement ring. The biggest thing mountains taught me, though, is that pushing your boundaries and conquering your fears is the most liberating and satisfying experience. Probably the first hill to test my mettle was Pinnacle Ridge up St Sunday Crag. Mountains and wild places rebalance everything, and put life into perspective when the bubble of the daily routine gets a bit much.
