If I could only climb one more mountain in my life it would be...

JEREMY ASHCROFT

I’m busily attempting to climb all the 4000m Alpine peaks, with the hardest of them all and, in my books, the most beautiful being the Aiguille Blanche de Peuterey. I have yet to do it and would like to do it as part of the classic Peuterey Ridge. Completion of it would top my climbing career off nicely.

SARAH RYAN

Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête in winter, arriving at the summit on a quiet, clear and starry night. The north face of Ben Nevis is just staggering.

CAROLYN SMITH, TRAIL READER

I want to say some far-flung mountain across the pond, but it would have to be Snowdon where my walking adventures began and where I left depression behind and gained determination.

GRAHAM THOMPSON

I think I would take a last look at Great Gable and sleep on the summit and look down Wasdale and over to Scafell. It’s hard to find a finer place. I’ve done it zillions of times from all angles; climbed rock routes on it, scrambled it, done it in baking sun and blizzards. Slept on it a few times too.

SIMON INGRAM

Bla Bheinn. It’s pretty tough to imagine a mountain with more going for it than that one. Climbing it followed by a night in a woody Highland lodge would take some beating.

BEN WEEKS

The Matterhorn – it must be the most iconic and aesthetically mountain-like mountain in the world. If I had to hang up my boots after one more summit, that would be it.

HUW GILBERT

If it was a walk, it would be close to home above Corris; up and around what’s known locally as Jem’s Mine and then across the valley to Cwm Odin. If it’s a mountain, then I’ll still stay close to home and plump for the circuit around Cadair Idris from Minffordd.

SIR CHRIS BONINGTON

High Pike, the gentle hill above our house.

MICK FOWLER

This year’s objective of course! I am climbing with Victor Saunders again and we have our eyes on a fantastic unclimbed mountain in a rarely visited part of the Himalayas. I’m not saying where, but it’s a great line straight to the summit, interesting area, challenging climbing, different descent route... it ticks all the boxes. Excitement levels are high!

KEVYN THOMAS, TRAIL READER

Snowdon. Of all the places I have been all over the world, Snowdon and north Wales is where my soul belongs.

NICK KING, TRAIL READER

Tryfan, been up it too many times to count and every time was different. Will never tire of a great day’s scrambling up there.

ALAN HINKES

K2 – or Roseberry Topping.

JENNA MARYNIAK

I’d love to go to the Isle of Skye and climb all the mountains that aren’t too scary!

DAVID WAYLES, TRAIL READER

Stickle Pike in the Lake District's Duddon Valley as it was the first hill I went up as a child. I can see my childhood home from there, and many of the other farms my family worked over the centuries. I intend it to be the last hill I ever ascend – as ashes!

JEN RANDALL

There’s a beautiful Munro you can see from the boulders in Torridon. I spend a lot of our climbing sessions there staring at it. I need to learn its name and get up there!
